National Coverage of Attorney Maris J. Liss’ Work in Appellate Courts

Blog, News

Last week, the Sixth Circuit affirmed a Board of Immigration Appeals’ decision to deny a Mexican native’s request to stay in the U.S., after he claimed he feared he would be harmed if deported.

Our very own Maris J. Liss is Ramon Amezola-Garcia’s attorney and says that the U.S. deported him to Mexico in the midst of the ongoing case. She told Law360 that Amezola-Garcia is seeking for the departure to be deemed voluntary, as there are lessened consequences for his record, should he seek to legally return to the U.S. The hope, she said, is that Amezola-Garcia will be allowed to return to the U.S. for the future proceedings of his case.

Maris was quoted in the article: “We are beginning the process for bringing Ramon back to the U.S. by approaching the government to facilitate it. We hope the government will cooperate.”

Amezola-Garcia acknowledged to an immigration judge that he was deportable but claimed that he would be harmed and tortured, if returned to Mexico, because his brother-in-law was murdered in 2009 after investigating criminal activity on behalf of the Mexican government. The BIA has been ordered by the Sixth Circuit to take another look at its rejection of the Amezola-Garcia’s bid to leave voluntarily. Read more about the case here at Law360.com.
